Remembering Cronkite for Real

Remembering Cronkite for Real

NEW YORK - Walter Cronkite, the legendary newsman, died Friday evening at the age of 92. An outpouring of respect and remembrance has been non-stop ever since. Every newspaper in the country has published a story on the passing, and rightly so. Cronkite was one of only a few journalists who defined the profession for the modern age, and whose celebrity matched his accomplishments.

Most coverage will contain the phrase, "the most trusted man in America," a label Cronkite certainly found amusing and absurd even as he relished it. As true as it was on its face, it also was a stamp of accomplishment - a summing up, an early epitaph of sorts - that a real news hound might find ill-suited if not utterly inappropriate to the profession.

CNBC Hearts Porn After Scoring Big With Dirty Doc

CNBC Hearts Porn After Scoring Big With Dirty Doc

NEW YORK - What is at present a cool business relationship could (and perhaps should) blossom into a love affair - between CNBC and the adult entertainment industry.

The numbers are in and the progressively edgy business channel scored big with Porn: Business of Pleasure, which was the network's second highest rated documentary ever.

Don’t look for networks execs take to the 30 Rock roof to serenade the industry any time soon, but the success of this airing has not been lost on interested observers and it certainly won't be lost on network programmers. The country may be awash in sin, but it obviously wants an extra helping of it along with the news - business or otherwise - and will reward the network that provides it.

CNBC's 'Porn: Business of Pleasure' Debuts

CNBC's 'Porn: Business of Pleasure' Debuts

NEW YORK - Porn: Business of Pleasure, CNBC's special report on the pornography industry, debuts tonight and will be repeated ad nauseam thereafter.

The cable business network has been aggressively promoting the special, which it says will take "an unprecedented behind-the-scenes look inside the multibillion dollar pornography business, from the threats to its profitability to exclusive behind-the-scenes interviews with the industry's biggest stars to the one issue that could bring the adult industry to it's [sic] knees." (Double-entendre and misspelling noted.)

Unlike all such specials and documentaries on the industry that crop up regularly on mainstream networks, CNBC interviewed Steven Hirsch of Vivid, performers Jesse Jane, Sasha Grey, director Max Hardcore and executives such as Samantha Lewis of Digital Playground and Joy King of Wicked. (Sarcasm intended.)

Televised Art Class Scandalizes Viewers

Televised Art Class Scandalizes Viewers

LONDON – Calls from outraged citizens jammed Channel 4’s switchboard last week after a televised art class scandalized the public by presenting a nude model and encouraging viewers to draw her.

The program, “Life Class: Today’s Nude” is part of a continuing lunchtime series designed to educate about artistic technique. Each weekday class features a different model and a different instructor tutoring the audience about a variety of artistic methods.

On Wednesday’s 12:30 p.m. segment, model Kirsten Varley posed au naturel in a variety of positions while artist Gary Hume offered tips and tricks for capturing the nude in art.

Channel 4 and the artist who developed the show’s concept denied the class was intended to be sensational.
